The Second National Conversation Analysis Workshop Held by SFL

Conversation Analysis (CA) is a mature discipline in the field of sociology which, because its research objectives are real and natural conversations, is closely related to linguistics. Since the birth of CA in the 1960s, researchers have been mainly from Britain and America, and thus the object of study have been mainly the English dialogues between native speakers. CA has a set of meticulous and serious ways for the transcription of recordings of natural conversations, which cannot be grasped without special training. Besides, so great importance attached to the details of natural dialogues many researchers can hardly accept, which makes the main reason why CA has not developed as well as other disciplines in countries except America and Britain. In China, conversation analysis lacks recognition in the academic circle and is even misunderstood. CA is a discipline that observes and records people's social behavior and discovers the social order through authentic natural conversations. In order to enhance the Chinese scholars’ understanding of CA and promote sound development of CA studies in China, after holding The First National Conversation Analysis Workshop in 2012, SFL held the Second National Conversation Analysis Workshop from August 10th to 14th, 2015 during the summer vacation.

This time SFL invited Professor Paul Drew, a world-famous discourse analysis scholar from Loughborough University, UK and the first executive vice-president of the International Discourse Analysis Society, Professor Merran Toerien, Professor Clare Jackson from the University of York, UK, and Associate Professor Chase Raymond from the University of California, Los Angeles, USA to give a series of lectures. These lectures covered all the basic contents of discourse analysis research methods, including corpus conversion, discourse starting, discourse correction, discourse sequence organization, adjacency pair, priority structure, social behavior, person deixis, story narration, comparative study of cross-language discourse analysis, applied research of discourse analysis and so on. This workshop is expected to build a platform on which young scholars in China can conduct research in the field of CA and further popularize the approaches to conversation analysis studies. It is also believed that the workshop will help enhance the local academic atmosphere for conversation analysis studies and hopefully make SFL become the center for conducting research in conversation analysis in China.
