The First Foreign-Language-Dubbing Competition of Shanxi University was held by School of Foreign Languages (SFL) in the lecture hall on the fifth floor of Wenyingyuan Building at 6 p.m. on November 11th, 2013, aiming to diversify the ways of practicing spoken English for language learners, consolidate their language foundation through imitation, and improve their language application ability. It was also aiming to stimulate the freshmen’s interest in English learning and provide a platform to show the learning achievements of higher grades students.
At the beginning of the contest, the compere from SFL expressed hearty welcome to contestants, guests and viewers in five languages. After that, the match officially began. The contestants from each school proceeded voice-acting with the team as a unit, and four or five teams were a round. At the end of every round, there was a performance given by a group of students who major in minority languages in SFL. During the competition, the staff played the edited movie clips which were prepared by each team. Then, the confident contestants introduced themselves loudly and clearly one by one. After that the staff eliminated the sound of the movie clips, and the contestants began to dub them. The atmosphere was sometimes intense, sometimes relaxing, and even at times very lively. All the audience were motivated by certain clips of the movie The Croods. The contestants' lifelike and exaggerating dubbing cheered up the audience. The unique innocence in the hit movie Despicable Me rendered by the contestants with their excellent performance left a deep impression on the audience. In the movie The Lion King, the dubbing actor expressed Simba’s deep love to his kingdom vividly with powerful and manly voice. In the movie Princess Diaries, the dubbing actor became an ordinary girl, representing frustrations and hesitations the girl had suffered in her period of growth with ever-changing tones. Meanwhile, performances of three foreign language specialties of SFL, including Japanese, French and German made audiences enjoy themselves well in an amazing world of languages. Four contestants from the Academy of Music in the last group dubbed the film Mulan. Their performance was especially striking. They not only showed the inner world of traditional Chinese figures with their vivid tones of voice but also presented a music feast for the students present by making full use of their own professional advantages, which pushed the contest to a climax. The dramatic awards presentation made the excited audience quiet. The first prize for the competition went to the representative teams from the Academy of Music and School of Chinese Language and Literature .
The First Foreign-Language-Dubbing Competition, interesting and instructive, provides a platform for students to practice their oral language, and also an opportunity for foreign language learners to grasp more native spoken expressions. SFL will make continuous efforts to build this dubbing competition a special activity of Shanxi University. Given a happy language learning atmosphere and a rich cultural and ideological life on campus, SXU students will experience the fun of English in a different way.
