At 9:00 a.m. on March 10th, 2014, all the teachers and students from German Department of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) and three friends from Thuringia, Germany held an exchange activity in a friendly atmosphere in Room 401 of the new teaching building. Junior Students from the German Department made ample preparations under the guidance of their teachers in order to make this activity a big success.
Before the start of the exchange activity, three students of German class gave a welcome speech, introduced the long history and profound cultural deposits of Shanxi Province, and told German friends the specific situation of century-old Shanxi University and SFL respectively. During the activity, some versatile students performed several shows with Chinese characteristics, such as melodica and guitar playing of traditional Chinese classic melody Jasmine Flower, dances and so on. One of the most eye-catching show was Chinese zither solo played by Hu Huixuan.
The touching tweedle of Chinese zither flowed through her fingers, sometimes rapid but brimming with delicacy and sometimes lingering but without laggardness. It moved all the people present, including the German friends. When she played the last note, a warm applause broke out in the hall. The German friends marveled at it and showed great appreciation of the distinctive charm of the traditional Chinese musical instruments.
After the shows, the German majors sat together with the German guests in a circle, communicating with each other about the topics they were interested in. Some students asked if German youth moved out of their parents’ house to live by themselves after eighteen years old. A German college student, nineteen years old, replied that it was true because the age of eighteen meant becoming adult and being independent, and youth should not be a burden to their parents any more.
Another German friend said that German is a very difficult language to learn, and students who chose it as a major were courageous. When they were asked why they had chosen Germany rather than other European languages as their major, some students answered they did so for Germany’s most powerful economy, some for its national football team, and some for knowing Germany’s psychology, literature, history, etc. The whole atmosphere was quite lively.
After the exchange activities, they showed German friends around the campus in three groups respectively and had a meal at the canteen, offering German friends a chance to experience the life of Chinese undergraduates. At last, all of them ended up with a group photo to mark the occasion and exchanged contact information with each other.
Students from the German Department improved their spoken language effectively through the exchange activities, which also further enhanced the mutual understanding of German and Chinese undergraduates. In the meantime, they gained a deeper insight of Germany’s national conditions, its society, education, art, etc. This event opened up their thinking of learning German and laid a favorable foundation of cultural background for their language acquisition in the future.
