　　On October19, Professor Shu Dingfang, PhD tutor from Shanghai International Studies University and chief editor of Journal of Foreign Languages, visited the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) and delivered an academic lecture entitled The Metonymicity of Language. The audience present consisted of teachers and students from SFL, and also teachers from Shanxi University of Finance and Economics, Taiyuan Normal University, Shanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xinzhou Teachers University, etc. With no vacant seats in the lecture hall, the academic atmosphere there was very strong.

　　Starting with vivid examples, Professor Shu systematically introduced the metonymicity of language in terms of definition, categories, functions, mechanism, nature, genetic principles as well as its relationship with metaphor and the basis of metonymic phenomena. Then he further explained, as a cognitive phenomenon, metonymy’s effects on people’s thinking mode, language use and so on.

　　By further explaining the cause, nature and functions of metonymy, Professor Shu revealed the guiding significance of metonymicity of language on the nature and features of language operation. In the lecture, Professor Shu applied well-documented and extensive evidence and made a thorough discussion and intensive analysis of the metonymic phenomena, which broadened the horizons of the teachers and students present, and brought them many new ideas and much benefit. The entire lecture proved to be wonderful and vivid, winning applauses of the audience from time to time.

　　Upon the end of the lecture, Professor Shu interacted with teachers and students and answered their specific questions regarding academic researches and paper submission.
