In order to cultivate the interests of college students in English study and improve their comprehensive application abilities of English, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) held Shanxi University “FLTRP Cup” English Competition from September 18th to October 11th, which was composed of English Writing, Reading and Public Speaking Contest.
At 2:30 pm September 18th, English Writing Competition started first at Classroom 107 and 108 of the Science Building. In order to ensure the competition would fully test the English writing levels of the contemporary college students and extend their capabilities of critical thinking, the organizing committee of the competition elaborately designed the writing topics and the relevant rules. The students from 17 schools and departments including the School of Literature, the Department of History & Culture and the School of Educational Science attended the competition on time. The atmosphere of the competition was solemn and serious. The participants adapted to the competing tempo quickly and started to write attentively and calmly. Only the sound of flipping over the pages of dictionaries could be heard. Occasionally, some students stopped to think for a while and then continued to write. The participants were trying to present the brilliant words and sentences on the papers. The classrooms were quiet, but the determination and momentum of the contestants could be easily sensed. This was a silent battle! Although the results are not foreseeable, the performance and state of the students indicate that a number of good English writers will surely emerge here.
Many educators proficient in foreign languages were invited to grade the papers for the competition, which provides a full guarantee for the specialized, authoritative and academic nature of the competition. Writing, requiring manifold skills, is a comprehensive ability, for it needs students not only to use a variety of knowledge, such as foreign languages, grammars, discourse knowledge, sociological knowledge and so on, but also to possess logical capability, critical thinking skills and innovation capacity to convey information, express thoughts and communicate with other people. Based on the study of various domestic examinations, scholars found that among listening, reading and writing abilities, Chinese students are relatively weak in writing. In such a circumstance, schools, teachers and students should put more emphasis on writing. The competition, a good combination of English learning and fun providing a platform for students of all grades to train and show themselves, reveals the unique style of SFL, and at the same time, gives a model to and paves the way for the subsequent competitions.
