At 6:30 p.m., Sept. 14th, 2015, a lecture on college students’ career planning was held by the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) in Classroom A0101 in Liberal Arts Building. Wang Qi, deputy editor-in-chief, senior editor and senior translator of Hope Publishing House, was the specially invited lecturer. With Helen as her pen name, Ms. Wang is not only a member of Shanxi Writers Association and Translators Association of China, but also a senior publisher and spreader of children’s reading. She is also a part-time postgraduate supervisor of SFL and won excellent off-campus part-time supervisor of professional degree in Shanxi University in 2015. Having edited hundreds of books, published and translated over 20 books with their copyrights exported abroad, she repeatedly won national level publishing awards, Bing Xin Prize for Literature and China's Laurel Children's Book Award.

On the platform, Ms. Wang fully explained the reason why she chose the lecture title. Touched by the book The Ideal State of Vegetation she had been reading recently, she felt that the numerous students were just like numerous blades of grass and trees, absorbing sunshine and water to be thriving and growing for their dream and future.

The lecture started with one story. With soothing music, Ms. Wang led us into the world of the picture book Grandfather's Journey. While the picture book was showed in PPT, Ms. Wang read it aloud for the audience. The grandfather's journey is made up of childhood, family, hometown, career and dream. Childhood experiences and family environment make one's character and influence the direction of one's career and dream. The hometown is a knit in one's heart that one can never let go. Career planning is a life blueprint and its importance goes without saying. Then Ms. Wang explained two key points and three considerations. The two key points were “the ability to think” and “the attitude towards life”. We can see from the dialogue between Socrates and Plato that Western education stresses exploration and enlightenment, while that Confucius just directly says something indicates that Chinese education is biased towards preaching. The difference between Chinese education and Western education lies in the ability to think.

In history, three apples have changed the world. They are Eve's apple, Newton's apple and Jobs' apple respectively. For the same falling apple, we will just eat it up rather than think why it falls. Thus the world changes because of thinking. “The attitude towards life” includes “positive energy” and “quiet energy”. When the world is filled with “positive energy”, everyone cries loudly “come on” and “up”. People have been accustomed to keeping constantly on the run, which has become the common social condition. However, in this tumultuous society, “quiet energy” becomes more precious. Remaining oneself, cultivating oneself, practicing inner peace and becoming tolerant are the right way. The three considerations refer to where we stay, where we go and how we can go there. In relation to our personal situation and future career, we should understand the current situation correctly and build up ourselves steadfastly to realize our dreams step by step.

In her lecture, Professor Wang gave four suggestions, namely “learn to think, persist in studying willingly, unify knowing and doing, and care about the world”, to the audience. After the lecture, she detailedly answered students’ questions concerning publishing industry, academic acquisition and family education. She gave the audiences many copies of her book Past Years Flow in the Small Town with her written advice as encouragement.

It was a successful career planning course, in which Professor Wang Qi delivered not only employment information to undergraduates and postgraduates, but also strong longing for knowledge and correct attitudes to life. When facing unavoidable obstacles and failures, do not avoid them, do not exaggerate them, but show our optimistic state as Su Shi (1037-1101, a famous liberator and poet in the Song Dynasty) did during his demotion to a remote and poor place, and build our own ideal state of life. We were very thankful for Prof. Wangs sharing and looking forward to the next lecture on college students career planning.
