On August 28th 2014, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) held an earthquake and fire drill in the new building. Teachers and students of different grades took an active part in the drill which aims to enhance their safety awareness by testing their earthquake responding and fire fighting ability.
At 10 a.m., as a smoke bomb was set off on the fourth floor, there was immediately smoke coming out of the new building. At the same time, the commander blew a whistle, thus marking the beginning of the drill. The first whistling was the earthquake warning, which reminded students of hiding under the desks. The second one was the fire alarm. On hearing it, all students covered their noses and mouths with wet towels and left the building by taking the specified route. At every corner there were teachers guiding to prevent a stampede. With good preparation and discipline, all the drill participants were evacuated from the fire scene safely in good order within a few minutes.
After the drill, students gathered in front of the new building of SFL and experienced firsthand how to put out a fire. Facing a bonfire, all of them showed their bravery. Under some guidance, they extinguished the fire quickly with dry chemical fire extinguishers. Through this activity, students learned the correct use of a fire extinguisher and laid a solid foundation for maintaining campus safety.
The earthquake and fire drill ended successfully. It strengthens students’ safety consciousness and gives them a great opportunity to learn how to respond to earthquakes and fire emergencies as well as ways and skills to escape. This emergency drill shows the importance of life and the danger of fire. It also consolidates the safety education and the foundation of building a safe and harmonious campus.
