On the afternoon of April 20th, Professor Wen Xu, dean of College of International Studies, Southwest University, gave a lecture entitled Experiential Learning Based on Embodied Cognition
- A Rethink of Holistic Education in School of Foreign Languages.
Professor Wen’s lecture mainly involved four aspects. Firstly, he gave a brief introduction of the origin of the concept “holistic education”, its representative exponents and development process. Secondly, he elaborated on the importance of experiential learning. Thirdly, revolving around the relations between embodiment and embodied cognition, he explained the reason of emphasizing embodiment and one of its related topics - conceptualization and the four dimensions of embodied cognition. Lastly, he stressed the experiential learning from the perspective of embodied cognition. He talked about the embodied cognition view based on cognitive science and cognitive linguistics, the weaknesses of the traditional experiential learning, the new modes of experiential learning, various realizations of the new modes and their new requirements on the teachers, students and textbooks. In addition, Professor Wen Xu detailedly answered questions from SFL teachers and students. His lecture, which made the complicated subject understandable with clear theoretical explanation and interesting case analysis, won positive responses from the audience.
