The interview consisted of four sessions which were respectively one minute’s self-introduction, two minutes’ impromptu speech based on a given topic, simulated group debating and experience impartation by senior members in the debating team. During the self-introduction session, all contestants presented their uniqueness confidently with humorous languages. In the impromptu speech session, those who attended the interview brought up their opinions from an objective point of view about some hot issues and figures from both home and abroad, including the island dispute between China and Japan, the second-child policy and Guo Jingming, etc. The third session, simulated group debating, played a decisive role in this interview. All contestants debated heatedly on the subject of “whether the advantages would outweigh the disadvantages for college students to start a business”. The contestants were divided into three groups, and then each group debated with the other two groups separately. Firstly, the first debater (lead debater) presented standpoints with a general statement. And then, the second debater (question responder) with quick and logical thinking made complements. Lastly, the third debater (rebutter) from each side questioned each other by either asking sharp questions or saving the situation and resolving the questions raised by the opposing side in an alert and resourceful way. When it came to the free debate, each side debated intensely. They all looked for loopholes to defend themselves in the face of brilliant arguments of the opposing side. It is worth mentioning that the second debater (question responder) of the affirmative side Sun Jingwen and the third debater (rebutter) of the opposing side Gao Jie reacted quickly and were brilliant in the choice of words, showing enough confidence to beat the opponent. The participation of senior members made the interview more interesting, and they impressed us with their rigorous thinking and accurate expression. In the end, the senior members gave all the interviewees appropriate evaluation and sincere encouragement, greatly increasing their confidence.
The new debaters were of little skills but of great potential. After a period of training, they were expected to acquire better communicative and coordinating capacity and to be able to convince more people with their rigorous thinking. And one day, they will become the main force of the debating team.
