The 15th “Youth & Society” Debating Competition, sponsored by the Youth League Committee of Shanxi University (SXU), the Students Union and the Graduate Union, kicked off as planned in Lecture Hall on the third floor of Liberal Arts Building at 8:30 am, October 18th, 2014. Serving as guest judges were famous scholars and professors like Ph.D. Li An, etc. along with 26 students from 18 colleges. The opening debate in the Preliminary Round was between School of Foreign Languages SFLand School of Law on the topic “Do the pros for college students starting an undertaking outweigh the cons”, which aims to foster students’ creativity and critical thinking as well as to develop their logical thinking and verbal dexterity.

At the very beginning, the topic of this debate was first introduced. SFL was on the pro side, while School of Law was on the con side, debating over college students’ starting business. The host made an introduction to the judges, and then the participants gave the self-introduction and pregame performances. The four debaters from SFL team gave greetings to the audiences in German, English, Japanese and Chinese respectively, revealing their charisma. Afterwards, SFL declaimed Youngsters and the Rise of China written by Liang Qichao, a reformist and scholar, whose quotation of “If the youngsters are wise, the country will be wise; if the youngsters are well-off, the country will be well-off; if the youngsters are robust, the country will be robust; if the youngsters are independent, the country will be independent” reflected the topic of “the pros for college students starting an undertaking outweigh the cons”. As the debate began, Li Yan, the first debater of SFL team, proposed her opinions in respect of the individuals, the community, the society and the criteria to weigh the pros and cons. Then Wang Jinrui, the second debater, rebutted the idea of core competitiveness put forward by the first speaker of the counterclaim. What’s more, to reaffirm the pro statement, the third debater Wu Yushu raised a poignant question, “do students have more leisure time in high school or in university”. In the free debate session, the debate was bubbling, and the debaters of both sides exhibited their oratorical prowess with all kinds of quotations humorously and subtly. Their wonderful performance attracted the audience strongly and won bursts of spontaneous applause. Finally, the fourth debater Meng Yu summarized the whole team’s viewpoint in all respects. The competition was over. Apart from the judges scoring, the president hosted the session of “Questions & Answers” and the students of SFL, especially Gao Jie and Xiong Zheng, gave an excellent performance. The president also introduced the meaning of the logo of The “Young and Society” Debating Competition that is youth and enthusiasm. After giving marks to the two sides, the judges gave a general comment on their performance.

Although ending up with failure, SFL has provided a splendid debate competition to all the audience. And the regular process has set an excellent example to the new hands. Reagan, the former US president, once said to the effect that innovation is the most precious fortune as well as the root of mightiness and prosperity for a country. The future of China depends on university students and the spiritual eternity of Chinese people is determined by students’ inexhaustible creativity and pursuit for innovation. While these factors such as time, energy and financial capability in the period of starting a business are significant, it is of equal significance to weigh the pros and cons. This competition has helped to expand students’ mentality and enrich their campus life.
