On the afternoon of September 22nd, 2017, the Fifth Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) Cup Writing Contest and the Third FLTRP Cup Reading Contest, held by School of Foreign Languages (SFL), were started as schedule respectively at Room 105 and Room 106 of Science Building, Shanxi University.

The FLTRP Cup is a non-profit campaign for college students nationwide, aiming to provide an opportunity for those students to practice their reading and writing skills, and a platform for their self-challenge. A large number of students signed up for this campaign.

Much earlier than the schedule, contestants of 17 schools and departments from Wucheng Campus and Dadongguan Campus arrived at examination rooms.

The writing contest and the reading contest started at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively. All the participants were concentrated, looking sometimes inspired and other times a little hesitant. In the rooms could only be heard the rustling of pens.

The writing contest, while giving students room to create freely, examined their writing ability and on-the-spot performance. The reading contest put emphasis on examining students’ reading ability and speed as well as their international perspective.

Though the level of difficulty was unknown, one can still tell from the absorbed examinees the tense but orderly atmosphere of the test rooms and cannot help feeling proud of their enthusiasm for English learning.

The topics of this year’s FLTRP Cup contests are particularly designed to examine participants’ ability to think critically, extensively and creatively, fully in keeping with the international trend. They aim to promote students’ enthusiasm for English learning, open their minds, help them obtain a further understanding to the world culture, cultivate their thinking ability of combining both Chinese and western perspectives and push them to improve their English levels and practical abilities.

The two contests comprehensively examine students’ vocabulary, grammar, theory and writing ability, thus showing them the way in the following exercises.
