The Opening Ceremony of Youth "Three Walks"Volunteer English Morning Reading Successfully Held

At 7:00 pm on May 21st,2017, the opening ceremony of the volunteer English morning reading of youth "Three Walks" wasstarted in Room 301 of School of Foreign Languages (SFL).

At the beginning, the host showed everyone the specific procedures of the activity.

To begin with, Ding Yuxi, the leading reader, introduced the tips and skills of reading. Citing her own English learning experience, she first mentioned that everyone should develop an interest in learning English because interest is the best teacher.Then she laid stress on the importance of phonetic symbols, the accuracy of pronunciation and the ways to look up words. She recommended that we should consult an English-English dictionary before resorting to an English-Chinese dictionary so as to enhance our understanding of English.And last, she mentioned students could improve spoken English by watching the British and the American TV series. She also pointed out the most important thing of learning English is long-term accumulation. Therefore, we must find the films and TV series we are interested in and perseverein watching and practicing.

The second item was the opening speech given by Wang Tian, vice secretary of the Student Union and Youth League Committeeof the Foreign Language School. Sheexpounded the starting point of this activity, which isto help the majority of the students overcome the weakness of their English learning- spoken language.Shecalled on the students to attach great importance to it. She said that the Youth “Three Walks" voluntary English morning reading activity was an active response to the initiative of "Three Walks", namely "walkingoff the Internet, out of the dormitory, and onto the playground", put forward by the CPC Central Committee. And itprovided everyone with a platform to learn English in combination with the characteristics of SFL.

In the third item of the ceremony, the studentsdivided themselves upinto several teams. After knowing each other, the team members selected their team leader and named their teams through deliberation. Theneach team introduced the team name and slogan respectively.

This activity aims to build a positive campus environment and increase students' interest in and enthusiasm for learning English. It will also help students with their oral ability to communicate in English, thus bringing them out of the dilemma of “Dumb English”andat the same time improvingtheir ability to deal with CET4 or CET6.
