In March, 2016, Wang Yanan, a Japanese major of 2014 from the School of Foreign Languages (SFL), Shanxi University, was awarded the national second prize, standing out of more than 5,000 contestants in the 12th Japanese Composition Contest of Chinese jointly organized by the Duan Press and the Center for China-Japan Exchange Studies. Chen Zhou, Wang Zeyuan and Cao Fan, also SFL Japanese majors of 2014, won the excellence prize.

The Japanese Composition Contest of Chinese is the largest and most influential event that aims at Chinese. The compositions are judged in terms of grammar and content and finally selected the best prize (Japanese Ambassador Prize) , 5 first prizes, 15 second prizes and 60 third prizes. Not only do the organizers present the prizes, they also publish the award-winning works in Japan annually. The total number of award-winning works for the year 2016 reached up to 300. The 12th Japanese Composition Contest of Chinese received a total of 5,177 contributions from 189 colleges and universities in 30 provinces, cities or municipalities of China, including Tongji University, Southwest Jiaotong University and Donghua University.

The contest has three themes, “What Chinese tourists can do besides ‘mad shopping (Shopaholic) in Japan”, “How my Japanese teacher’s edification has changed me”, and “What are the past winners doing now”. Wang Yanan chose the second one. In the article, she told of her confusion about study, life and future in the beginning, even considering giving up this major, but with the careful teaching of her Japanese teacher Holikawa Hidetsugu, she gradually restored her confidence, learning how to face the difficulties of life and adhering to the initial determination. The article showed her true feelings and was awarded the second prize.

Wang Yanan said when interviewed that although the college life is colorful, we must put study first. She believes “practice makes perfect”. Whether doing homework or writing diary, we should practice more and observe more. In face of anything, we should consider its meaning and fully tap its essence.

“I am very honored to receive the second prize of this contest. I would like to thank the judges. I have learned a lot and made great progress during the repeated revision of my article. My teacher Holikawa Hidetsugu also provides a lot of help. I am very grateful to him for his hard work.” The most-oft-mentioned word in Wang Yannan’s speech is thanks. She believes that with a grateful heart, everyone can achieve greater success.

In recent years, with the strong support of the relevant departments of Shanxi University, SFL has strengthened teaching reform constantly. It has organized students to participate in various competitions at home and abroad and achieved many good results. The excellent performance of Japanese major students in this contest fully demonstrates the level of Japanese language teaching of our school once again, and also greatly enhances our popularity and influence in this field.

The event provides Japanese major students with a better platform to show themselves. Congratulations to the four students and thanks for the hardworking teachers. Wish SFL students a better performance in future contests related to all our language specialties!
