On October 9th, 2015, the ninth 'FLTRP Cup' English Speech Contest for the professional group of Shanxi University was held in Room 301 of the new teaching building of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL). Students from all grades of SFL took part in the competition, and two foreign teachers, Valerie Harper and Dale Harper, and three Chinese teachers of SFL, Ying Guiping, Zhao Shengjie and Gao Zhejing, jointly acted as judges. The English Speech Contest has created a strong learning atmosphere, stimulated students' enthusiasm for English learning and achieved the expected results.
There were many highlights in this speech contest. It included not only prepared speeches but also impromptu speeches. In addition, there was also a session for judges to ask the contestants some questions, thus making the contest more impartial and open. Every competitor had made careful preparation. They were all neatly dressed, professional looking and standard in language expression, which passed the intense atmosphere of the contest on to every teacher and student on the spot. The speeches delivered by the senior students of Class 2013 were full of emotion and enthusiasm and were so extraordinary that they gained the praise of all the judges and added more color to the contest.
After the competition, Valerie, a foreign teacher of SXU, commented on the event. She mentioned this contest fully showed the students’ oral expression ability in English, and hoped further breakthroughs can be made to settle the problems in pronunciation and intonation.
In this competition, the first prize went to Gao Ting and Shi Jiayu and five students including Wang Yihan won the second prize. Through the “FLTRP” cup series competitions, the students not only experienced the atmosphere of English study, but also were spurred to find out their shortcomings and useful methods at the same time, so as to continue improving their English speech ability. Besides, the English speech competition for the non-professional group will be held as planned this Sunday and everyone is sincerely welcome to come and watch. At last we wish the contest a big success.
