At 2 o'clock of October 11th, 2015, the 9th "FLTRP Cup" English Speech Contest of Shanxi University was held in Room 301 of the new teaching building of SFL. On the very day was held the contest for non-English major group. A total of 19 excellent contestants from 17 schools and departments had been fully prepared and at their best state to approach the contest. To ensure the high quality of the contest, the organizing committee invited five teachers with high professional attainments from SFL as judges, including two Chinese teachers, namely Ms. Feng Wei and Ms. Qiao Jie, as well as three foreign teachers, Jennifer Tan, Valerie Harper and Dale Harper (ranked in no particular order). It's believed that the judges' scoring and comments would make the contest more wonderful.

This competition includes three parts: a three-minute prepared speech, a two-minute impromptu speech and a one-minute session for judges to ask questions. What deserves to be mentioned is that, to ensure the fairness of this competition, the order of the contest and the topics for the impromptu speeches are all decided by drawing lots 15 minutes before the competition starts.

The competition started. It was not hard to tell from the contestants’ standard pronunciation and confidently delivered theme speeches that all of them had made adequate preparation. They were only waiting to show themselves and get satisfactory results. Their wonderful performances in the impromptu-speech part not only gained the audiences’ applause for their excellent English foundation, but also earned nodding commendation from the judges. In the question part, without a bit of fluster, the contestants could calmly think and smoothly answer every question. Even though they were a little nervous and had pauses during the speech, they did a good job and at least would not regret.

After all the contestants delivered their speeches, Valerie Harper and Dale Harper representing all the judges made comments on the performances of all the contestants. The two foreign teachers corrected contestants’ pronunciation of some words in English. They patiently and humorously pointed out the mistakes made by the contestants. These comments allowed all the contestants to have a more profound understanding of their own weaknesses so that they can correct their mistakes and make greater progress in the future. As we gave our best wishes for the contestants to obtain good grades, we should also give our thanks to the judges for their comments. At the end of the contest came the prize-awarding ceremony which set up the first and the second prizes. Congratulations to all the awarded students again.

With the further development of globalization, both oral English and English listening are playing more and more important roles in our work and life. This competition aimed to test the students’ proficiency in spoken English and English listening, stimulate their enthusiasm of practicing spoken and listening English. It also aimed to improve the English of the students in Shanxi University and cultivate more excellent talents for our society.
